Dehydration is one of the most common — and most preventable — health crises in older adults. It is a leading cause of hospitalizations among seniors, contributing to urinary tract infections, kidney stones, confusion, falls, and dangerous medication interactions.
Yet getting seniors to drink enough water is often a genuine challenge. The thirst mechanism weakens with age, meaning older adults often do not feel thirsty even when they are significantly dehydrated. Medications can further suppress thirst signals. And plain water, frankly, is not always appealing.
The Hydration Challenge in Senior Care
The standard recommendation is eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day — but for many seniors, this feels like a chore rather than a pleasure. At DayBreak, we took a different approach: we made hydration beautiful, delicious, and social.
Why Fruit-Infused Water Works
Fruit-infused water — water naturally flavored by soaking fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables — offers multiple advantages for senior hydration:
- Enhanced flavor without sugar or artificial sweeteners — making water more appealing without the health risks of sugary beverages
- Natural vitamins and antioxidants — citrus fruits add Vitamin C; berries contribute anthocyanins; cucumber adds silica for skin health
- Visual appeal — a beautiful glass dispenser filled with colorful fruits is inviting in a way that a plain water pitcher simply is not
- Gentle electrolytes — adding a pinch of sea salt or using mineral water as a base can help with electrolyte balance
- Social ritual — at DayBreak, our hydration stations are a gathering point. Clients choose their flavors, discuss their favorites, and drink more as a result

Signs of Dehydration to Watch For
Family caregivers should watch for these warning signs in their loved ones: dark-colored urine, dry mouth, confusion or sudden behavioral changes, dizziness, headaches, and decreased urination. If you notice these signs, increase fluid intake immediately and consult a healthcare provider.
At DayBreak, our nursing staff monitors hydration daily as part of our comprehensive health oversight. It is one of the many ways we go beyond basic care to truly protect our clients’ health.
